The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon (SLMM) is a two-day mountain navigation competition (or race) that is held annually in the Lake District for teams of two runners.

The event comprises  6 linear courses of varying lengths and technical difficult and one ‘score’ course where competitors choose which controls to visit over a 2 day total of 12 hours.

The first day finishes at a mid-way campsite. Competitors must carry the lightweight camping and safety equipment listed in the rules. Competitors need to be competent in the use of map and compass in the mountains. Many checkpoints require accurate navigation, which is even more important in misty conditions.

The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon is organised by Lakeland Events Community Interest Company.
Any surplus generated , and not required for future events will be distributed to registered charities that support access to the mountain environment and the wellbeing of our competitors.

SLMM Competitors’ Guide

We’ve prepared a downloadable guide (PDF, 1MB) containing all the information you’ll need to prepare for the SLMM and get yourself to the starting line. Here is the 2025 Guide – it’s quite long so we suggest you read it online rather than print it. It does have some useful printable checklists though.

Some reviews of the SLMM from competitors

Many thanks for all the positive comments from those who completed our survey. Thanks also to those who made suggestions for improvements-we have added them to our list of things to consider for next year rather than publish here. From the 2018 event: “Great introduction to mountain marathons in delightful scenery” – Thomas Hague “The […]
